Twyfelfontein

Set in the Kunene Region of northwestern Namibia, Twyfelfontein is a spectacularly scenic area, featuring one of the largest and most important concentrations of Rock Art in Africa. ‘Twyfelfontein’ translates to ‘Fountain of Doubt’, which refers to the perennial spring situated in the impressive Huab Valley, flanked by the slopes of a Sandstone Table Mountain.

It was this spring that attracted Stone Age Hunters over 6,000 years ago. During this time the extensive group of Rock Engravings and Paintings were produced. There are  over 30 different Sacred Ritual Sites of the traditional Hunter-Gatherer Communities.

Mowani Mountain Camp

Derived from Swahili, "M'Wane, meaning "Place of God", the name was chosen to reflect the Camp's serene, almost spiritual setting in Damaraland, Namibia.

Dwarfed by massive Ochre Boulders, the Camp is absorbed into the landscape, making it one with our shared History of Life in this Prehistoric Land. Every soft curve or ragged edge frames the landscape differently, as if you are seeing it for the first time, every time.

With only 15 thatched roof, tented Chalets, each opens up to take in the magnificent Views. Although the evening breeze keeps the Camp cooled at Night, there is Air-Conditioning and Fans in each Chalet. The Chalets have a view either across the Valley or over a Boulder-Strewn Valley.

Day 6

Drive to your respite for 2 nights in beautiful coastal city of Swakopmnund, Your Guide will point out places of interest along the way and will make time for suitable comfort breaks en route.

Swakopmund

Set along Namibia's scenic coast, Swakopmund is known for its relaxed Beach Vibes, Colonial Architecture, and its surrounding otherworldly Desert Terrain. Swakopmund was founded in 1892 as the main harbor for German South-West Africa (the official name for Germany's Colonial Territory). The Seaside Town is often described as being more German than Germany. Swakopmund is the Capital of the Skeleton Coast Tourism Area.

Swakopmund has a mild desert climate, with the temperature varying little during the year. The town sees only about 20 mm of rain around the year; instead, thick fog is a frequent occurrence. This is also why the Namibian coast is infamous for its shipwrecks. In addition to bringing the moisture needed for the vegetation, the fog is also liable to lower the temperature to below +10°C in the winter.

The Strand Hotel

Your homebase for the next two nights, The Strand Hotel, is located at the promenade with views of the Atlantic Ocean. Strand Hotel Swakopmund features a spa and gym, restaurants and bars. It offers a 24-hour Front Desk. The contemporary style and appearance of the Strand Hotel is a gentle historical reminder of both German and Namibian Interior and Exterior Architectural Designs. There are 3 Restaurants on location.

Basis: Bed & Breakfast

During your Roadtrip, you will visit the World’s largest Breeding Colony of Cape Fur Seals (Arctocephalus pusillus). Located in Cape Cross Seal Reserve, you’ll find home to approximately 80,000 to 100,000 of these seals. Having ears, they are grouped with Sea Lions in the Eared Seal Family (family Otariidae). This number increases in the Breeding Season months of November and December to over 200,000.

There is no rush. Take your time capturing these fascinating creatures!

Please note, the smell shifts with the Seasons. You may wish to bring a Neck Gaitor, to cover your Mouth and Nose.

Day 7

Relax and explore the area in and around the town and Walvis Bay. Your Guide will be take you on a a City Tour and can take you to the Lagoon at Walvis Bay, and onwards to the Wetlands for some Birding and Photography.

Day 8

After Breakfast, your journey takes you into the heart of the oldest Desert in the World, the Namib, to the vicinity of the legendary Sossusvlei. Namib Outpost is situated southeast of Sesriem and is surrounded by the Nubib, Tsaris and Naukluft mountains, with views of the dunes to the west.

Sesriem

Sesriem Canyon is located approximately 4.5km from the entrance gate of the Namib-Naukluft National Park.

The Tsauchab River has shaped the Canyon over millions of years, and it is one of the few places in the area that holds water all year round. The early Afrikaans explorers in the region named the canyon after the fact that they had to use six (“ses”) leather straps (“riem”) tied together to create a rope long enough to lower buckets into the canyon below, in order to fetch water.

Namib Outpost

Within the 7,000 hectares of private Nature Reserve Namib Outpost offers relaxed hospitality with a natural atmosphere.

Enjoy the impressive Panoramic View either from your room, the main house with Restaurant, Lounge and Pool Terrace imposingly set at the foot of a Mountain. Or take the hike up to the amazing Sundowner viewpoint.

Staying in the Superior Suite offers the exclusive option of Sleeping Under the Stars, aka “Star Bathing”.

Basis: Full Board Plus - Dinner, Bed, Breakfast, and Lunch

Day 9

After early Morning wakeup with Rusks & Coffee, head to Namib-Naukluft National Park. Photograph the “Namib Sand Sea” as it sparkles in the Sunrise. World-famous Sossusvlei is the name of an enormous Clay Pan, flanked by a field of famous towering Sand Dunes that flush red in the early Morning Sun. Close to the Sossusvlei Pan is Dead Vlei, another Pan where water once flowed. However, all that remains now are the skeletons of Camel Thorn Trees that reach up out of the Earth.

Namib Desert

The Namib Desert is commonly referred to as the world’s oldest desert as it has been around for about 43 million years. Part of the desert, towards the center, incorporates the Namib Naukluft Park, which is the largest park in Namibia and also the third largest in Africa. The park these days, is a combination of the Namib Desert Park and the Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park as well as sections of the Diamond Area. The combination of all these areas adds up to about 50 000 square kilometers. The Naukluft Mountain area was initially created as a sanctuary for the Hartmann’s Mountain zebra. In 2013, a large part of the desert became a UNESCO World Heritage site under the name of “Namib Sand Sea”.

Sossusvlei

Situated in the largest conservation area in Africa (the Namib-Naukluft National Park), Sossusvlei is possibly Namibia’s most spectacular and best-known attraction. Characterized by the large red dunes that surround it, Sossusvlei is a large, white, salt and clay pan and is a great destination all year round. The dunes in this area are some of the highest in the world and provide photographic enthusiasts with wonderful images in the beautiful morning and evening light. Sossusvlei literally translates to “dead-end marsh”, as it is the place where the dunes come together preventing the Tsauchab River to flow any further, some 60km east of the Atlantic Ocean. However, due to the dry conditions in the Namib Desert the River seldom flows this far and the pan remains bone-dry most years.

Dead Vlei

Dead Vlei Camel Thorn Trees © Flyga Twiga™ LLC

Close to Sossusvlei, Dead Vlei is a clay pan characterized by dark, dead camel thorn trees contrasted against the white pan floor. The pan was formed when the Tsauchab River flooded, and the abundance of water allowed camel thorn trees to grow. However, the climate changed, and the sand dunes encroached on the pan, blocking the river from reaching the area. The trees are estimated to be approximately 900 years old, however they have not decomposed due to the dry climate. Dead Vlei is at least 1km walk from the parking lot so be sure to take drinking water with you.

Following your early Morning Hikes, your Guide will serve you a delicious Breakfast, under the Camel Thorn Trees that dot the Desert.

Head back to Namib Outpost for some much deserved R&R. Lounge by the Pool, get a Massage, or simply nap in your Day Bed.
